Directed and written by Paul Haggis and co-starring James Franco, Mila Kunis, Olivia Wilde, Liam Neeson, Adrien Brody, Kim Basinger and Maria Bello.

The film tells three inter-connected love stories that take place in Paris, New York and Rome.

Paris: Michael (Neeson), a writer who recently left his wife Theresa (Basinger), receives a visit from his lover Anna (Wilde). The story explores their very complicated on/off relationship due to her inability to commit because of a terrible secret.

New York: Julia (Kunis) has recently been charged with attempting to kill her son, a charge which she firmly denies. As a result of these charges, her son is now in the custody of his father Rick (Franco) who is trying everything in his power to take the boy away from her. Julia is trying at all costs to regain custody of her son.

Rome: Sean (Brody), an American business man on a trip to Italy, falls in love with an Italian woman, Monica (Atias). THE ENDLESS SUMMER

50th Anniversary Screening

This year is the 50th Anniversary of The Endless Summer and as part of the celebration; we are bringing the film to the Del Mar for a special one night event on July 23rd. Endless Summer has not been seen on the big screen in decades and now the film has been digitally restored by Warner Digital! The film looks gorgeous and the legions of fans will be so very “stoked” to continue to pass along from generation to generation the film that became and remains the anthem of a sport and a lifestyle.

While Bruce Brown had been making films about surfing since the late 1950s, The Endless Summer was his first film to receive a nationwide release; it was also the first serious cinematic look at the sport to click with a mass audience. In his narration, Brown muses that if someone had enough time and money, they could literally follow the summer around the globe, and so Brown and two of his surfing buddies, Robert August and Mike Hynson, decide to do just that. With their surfboards as luggage, August and Henson travel from one coastline to the next, trying the waves in Hawaii, Africa, Australia, Tahiti, and a number of other nations where most folks had never even seen a surfboard before. Along the way, August and Hynson learn a lot about people around the world, and grow up a bit while they search for the elusive perfect wave. The Endless Summer also features a great surf-rock score by The Sandals.

E.T. THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL

SPECIAL SCREENING FOR THE DOWNTOWN ASSOCIATION OF SANTA CRUZ: KIDS WEEK

Both a classic movie for kids and a remarkable portrait of childhood, E.T. is a sci-fi adventure that captures that strange moment in youth when the world is a place of mysterious possibilities (some wonderful, some awful), and the universe seems somehow separate from the one inhabited by grown-ups. Henry Thomas plays Elliott, a young boy living with his single mother (Dee Wallace), his older brother Michael (Robert MacNaughton), and his younger sister Gertie (Drew Barrymore). Elliott often seems lonely and out of sorts, lost in his own world. One day, while looking for something in the back yard, he senses something mysterious in the woods watching him. And he's right: an alien spacecraft on a scientific mission mistakenly left behind an aging botanist who isn't sure how to get home. Eventually Elliott puts his fears aside and makes contact with the "little squashy guy," perhaps the least threatening alien invader ever to hit a movie screen. As Elliott tries to keep the alien under wraps and help him figure out a way to get home, he discovers that the creature can communicate with him telepathically. Soon they begin to learn from each other, and Elliott becomes braver and less threatened by life. E.T. rigs up a communication device from junk he finds around the house, but no one knows if he'll be rescued before a group of government scientists gets hold of him. In 2002, Steven Spielberg re-released E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial in a revised edition, with several deleted scenes restored and digitally refurbished special effects

Special Screening

Bela Fleck: How to Write a Banjo Concerto

The Cabrillo Festival of Contempoaray Music celebrates Bela Fleck's remarkable recording career with a one night only screening of this documentary.

Following the film will be a special Q&A appearance by Bela Fleck.

'Béla Fleck: How To Write A Banjo Concerto' follows banjo trailblazer Béla Fleck through one of his most challenging musical journeys so far, into the world of the Symphony Orchestra. Béla is commissioned to compose a major banjo concerto, possibly the first of its kind for banjo and 80 piece symphony orchestra. It begins before he has written a note, and concludes a year later, with the sold out premiere concert with the Nashville Symphony. A very intimate look at the process of composition and collaboration, "How to Write a Banjo Concerto" features Earl Scruggs, Chick Corea, Edgar Meyer, Chris Thile, Zakir Hussain, Abigail Washburn and other close musical friends of Béla's. The film also digs into 'father issues', with Béla being named after classical composers by an absentee father. Composing this piece forces Béla to confront these issues.

VENUS IN FUR

Directed by Roman Polanski

Best Director - Cesar Awards

Best Screenplay- Lumiere Awards

Based on the Tony Award-winning Broadway play by David Ives, which itself was based on Leopold von Sacher-Masoch's groundbreaking novella, VENUS IN FUR is the latest film from master filmmaker Roman Polanski. Alone in a Paris theater after a long day of auditioning actresses for his new play, writer-director Thomas (Amalric) complains that no actress he's seen has what it takes to play the lead female character: a woman who enters into an agreement with her male counterpart to dominate him as her slave. Thomas is about to leave the theater when actress Vanda (Seigner) bursts in, a whirlwind of erratic - and, it turns out, erotic - energy. At first she seems to embody everything Thomas has been lamenting. She is pushy, foul-mouthed, desperate and ill-prepared - or so it seems. When Thomas finally, reluctantly, agrees to let her try out for the part, he is stunned and captivated by her transformation. Not only is Vanda a perfect fit (even sharing the character's name), but she apparently has researched the role exhaustively, learned her lines by heart and even bought her own props. The likeness proves to be much more than skin-deep. As the extended "audition" builds momentum, Thomas moves from attraction to obsession until, with Vanda taking an ever more dominant role, the balance of power shifts completely.

OBVIOUS CHILD

For aspiring comedian Donna Stern, everyday life as a female twenty-something provides ample material for her incredibly relatable brand of humor. On stage, Donna is unapologetically herself, joking about topics as intimate as her sex life and as crude as her day-old underwear. But when Donna gets dumped, loses her job, and finds herself pregnant just in time for Valentine's Day, she has to navigate the murky waters of independent adulthood for the first time. As she grapples with an uncertain financial future, an unwanted pregnancy, and a surprising new suitor, Donna begins to discover that the most terrifying thing about adulthood isn't facing it all on her own. It's allowing herself to accept the support and love of others. And be truly vulnerable. Never failing to find the comedy and humanity in each awkward situation she encounters, Donna finds out along the way what it means to be as brave in life as she is on stage. Anchored by a breakout performance from Jenny Slate, OBVIOUS CHILD is a winning discovery, packed tight with raw, energetic comedy and moments of poignant human honesty. Writer/Director Gillian Robespierre handles the topic of Donna's unwanted pregnancy with a refreshing matter-of-factness rarely seen onscreen. And with Donna, Slate and Robespierre have crafted a character for the ages - a female audiences will recognize, cheer for, and love.

BOYHOOD

Starring Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette

Filmed over 12 years with the same cast, Richard Linklater's "Boyhood" is a groundbreaking story of growing up as seen through the eyes of a child named Mason (a breakthrough performance by Ellar Coltrane), who literally grows up on screen before our eyes. Starring Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette as Mason's parents and newcomer Lorelei Linklater as his sister Samantha. "Boyhood" charts the rocky terrain of childhood like no other film has before. Snapshots of adolescence from road trips and family dinners to birthdays and graduations and all the moments in between become transcendent, set to a soundtrack spanning the years from Coldplay's Yellow to Arcade Fire's Deep Blue. "Boyhood" is both a nostalgic time capsule of the recent past and an ode to growing up and parenting. It's impossible to watch Mason and his family without thinking about your own journey.
